Myopia
II Peter 1:9 -
But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot
see afar off...
The human eye is
said to be one of the most complex members of the body.
Some have said that even in our time of advanced science
and technology man is unable to duplicate or produce any
kind of device that can operate as the eyes do. They
have the ability to receive data from both lenses and
yet integrate both images into one harmonious image.
The eyes are also able to move with a mere electronic
impulse sent by the brain telling them which direction
to look.
Along with the
complexities of the eyes there are also conditions and
diseases that can impair the vision or worse still
render the eyes completely blind. One of these
conditions is called Myopia or as it is commonly known
as “Nearsightedness”. Myopia affects the eyes’ ability
to see images that are in the distance. Anything that
is close can be seen with little or no difficulty hence
the name Nearsightedness.
The term Myopia
however has an alternate meaning. It refers to one who
is short sighted in their thinking and planning. They
are myopic, lacking foresight and discernment. They
take no thought for tomorrow only focusing on the here
and now. Oh how our society in large part has become
one of a myopic mind set. There is no thought for their
life after this life. They search blindly for true and
lasting satisfaction in those things that can only
address the temporal but not the eternal. They will
never find the peace or true satisfaction that their
soul is searching for so long as they search outside of
Jesus Christ. They are like what one man described:
A blind man in a dark room looking for a black cat
that isn’t even there. People will never be
able to fill the void in their life as long as they keep
looking at the things of this world and not at Jesus.
Because just like that blind man, they are looking for
something that isn’t even there.
