                        Non-Verbal Clowning
You may be wondering, “What in the world is “non-verbal” clowning?” Does that mean we just walk around, act goofy and not say anything? Oh no! Not at all!

Remember, we clowns want to convey a message to the class.

Keep in mind, in clowning, if you act too silly, the class will respond to your silliness and you may have “instant chaos” on your hands.

Keep it constructive and focused. You can do this and still have a blast.

Non-verbal gospel clowning is just that: Giving a message without speaking.

This will add a new twist to your normal routine.

Non-verbal clowning is good to use at home and abroad. It is great on the international level, or mission field, where the clown does not speak the same language that the class does.

You convey the gospel message with props, actions, and music in the background.

This, by the way, has been proven to be very effective as it contains the element of “surprise”!! And as you well know, we all like surprises. Well, you’re class will love a good surprise too.

The class will wonder what you will do next?!!

So don’t knock it, ‘til you try it!!

When it is all said and done, your class will have received the gospel message that you were wanting to get across.

Here is a routine that you can try out. Remember, have a great time and your class will also.

THE “SIN” BOX.

This is a good skit that will illustrate how “inviting” sin can be and may seem enjoyable until we get stuck and can’t get ourselves out. The clown finds the solution to the dilemma is confession and forgiveness.

You may chose an instrumental medley of “O Lord you are beautiful”, “Greater than our sin”, “Amazing Grace”. Or “Lord of Love”, etc.
(Be sure to practice on your “timing” as to end the skit when the song ends).

WHAT YOU NEED:

*BOX – Large enough to stand in and low enough to step in and out of easily.
On one side print a bright and colorful, “Come On In”! On the opposite side print a messy and ugly “Sin”.

Set the box in the center of the stage with “Come On In”! facing the class.
· A PIECE OF ROPE
· A BALLOON
· A BIBLE (Small enough to fit into your pocket).

WHAT YOU DO:

Everything is done in pantomime. As the music begins, the clown enters in and sees the box. The clown gingerly approaches and reads what it says.

Depending on the stage area, You may pick up the box to read it so everyone can see what it says.

Clown looks to the audience and ask if they think you should go in. Put one foot in, “pose” and then jump back out.

Laugh as if it were fun.

Then approach the box a second time and decide to enter in.

The clown puts “both” feet in and shakes from side to side before jumping out again.

The third time, the clown enters the box with their back facing the class, shake around a little and then try to get out.

Your Feet Are Stuck!!!!!!!!!

The clown twists its body around so that the back side of the box faces the class and they see the word “Sin”.

Then the clown sees it.

The clown looks through their pockets to try and find something to get them out!

Clown finds a ROPE and ties it around the waist and tries to pull their self out.

(Be sure to pull one way then the next, being mindful of facial expressions, etc.)

It doesn’t work.

Next clown finds a BALLOON. Stretch it a few times, then blow it up and try to lift your self out!

It doesn’t work either.

Then clown finds the BIBLE. Clown looks sheepishly up to God and lip the word “hi”, while waving.

Clown shows Him that he is trapped in sin and tells Him they were the one who did it.

He tells clown to look in the Bible and read it.

Then clown closes his eyes and bows his head to pray.

Clown asks for forgiveness, and with an “amen”, breathes a sigh of relief.

Clown asks God if they may come out.

Clown carefully takes one foot out of the box and then the other.

Clown looks toward God and gives the “Sin” box a swift kick as if to say, “I won’t being doing that again.”

At this point, the song should end. Clown gives God a “thumbs up” and a smile and exits.Don’t forget to practice, practice, practice. And be mindful of your timing. Give it a try. I think you’ll enjoy this fresh twist to Gospel Clowning, and your class will too.

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, THINK ON THESE THINGS! Philippians 4:8
